8:20 Start Time Set for Fall

The start time for the entire Gorman campus has been changed to 8:20 a.m. beginning this fall. The later start time was advocated by the Gorman Student Council and reviewed by the Tyler Catholic School Council.

The change better mirrors the St. Gregory school schedule, allowing parents and guardians time to transport students to and from the St. Gregory and Gorman campuses. Supervision of students at Gorman will begin as in past years at 7:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria.

The time change was initiated by the Gorman Student Council earlier this spring after noting and researching secondary school start times shifting to later in the morning across the country. The move also helps families with students on both campuses coordinate transportation and evens class meeting times across the school day. All classes will still meet the time standards set by the two accrediting groups for Gorman: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as Texas Catholic Conference Education Department.

The new schedule will still include most days a more abbreviated advisory in the morning  as well as four minute passing blocks for all classes as is the current schedule.  Most of the time decrease is in the third block classes which had significantly longer time than other blocks, even with the lunch breaks that happen for high school grades in that block.   In the former schedule-- adapted in the mid-nineties -- classes met anywhere from 86-95 minutes a day; in the new schedule, all classes will meet eighty-seven minutes a day with a twenty-four minute advisory and twenty-seven minute lunch.  Gorman’s schedule has remained constant for over a decade, though in the late 1980’s school was dismissed earlier.
